On Mondays Morning Focus we discovered that up to 30 percent of households are not signed up to an authorised waste collection service and local authorities have been given new powers to crack down on illegal dumping.
Householders must be able to prove that they’re signed up to a collection service or bringing their waste to a recycling centre. Southern Region Waste Co-ordinator Phillipa King joined Gavin Grace and said council officials will be knocking on doors to eradicate illegal dumping.
The Government is being accused of exploiting the country’s carers. The Labour Party tabled a motion in recent days looking for several measures to be introduced to help those who care for their loved ones. They include the abolition of the means-test for Carer’s Allowance, which it wants to be exempt from income tax. However, the party is now accusing Fianna Fáil of a ‘u-turn’ by supporting an amendment to the motion, then voting against it. Jan O’Sullivann who is Labour Party TD for Limerick joined us on the phone to explain he situation.
Clare’s first homeless hub for families is now up and running in Ennis. It has the capacity to cater for five families in total and opened its doors to the first family on Friday afternoon, with the remaining units to be filled this week. It’ll be run by Novas Ireland in conjunction with Clare County Council and acts as a bridge between emergency accommodation and a more permanent home for those in need. Head of Policy and Communications with Novas Una Burns spoke to James Mulhall on Friday when it opened and gave us her reaction.

Edwards Lifesciences, the global leader in patient-focused innovations for structural heart disease and critical care monitoring are extending its presence in the Mid-West of Ireland and has pledged a donation of €45,000 and an estimated 100 hours of volunteer hours to the GAA in the Limerick and Clare regions to be shared among four clubs.
The donation, of just over €10,000 per club, will go to four GAA clubs and will fund club renovation or ground upgrades as well as a family fun day.
Croi, the heart and stroke charity, will also collaborate with the successful clubs to provide free heart health checks for their communities.
This will be supplemented with Edwards Lifesciences employees spending time at each club to carry out works.
All GAA clubs in Clare and Limerick are invited to submit an expression of interest to the GAA, to be considered by the adjudication panel, consisting of representatives from Edward Lifesciences Foundation, the GAA Community & Health department in Croke Park and an independent contributor.
