Fire crews have responded to bonfires in the Cloughleigh area of the town every night since Sunday.

In one incident, a member of Ennis Fire Service was struck by a rock but wasn’t seriously hurt, while a fire truck sustained some damage during one of the attacks.

On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights, fire personnel were forced to withdraw from the scene for their own safety after they came under attack from youths.

Last night, the fire brigade was called to a fire in the same area and were again showered with stones. Gardaí were called to the scene, and the gang soon dispersed, allowing fire crews to deal with the fire without further incident.

A spokesperson from Clare’s County Fire Service has confirmed that a number of items were thrown at fire crew members as they attended a bonfire in the vicinity of the astro turf facility in Cloughleigh.

They added that “the bonfire was subsequently brought under control” and “no significant damage was caused to the fire tender during the incident”.
