Clare are out of the All-Ireland championship after suffering their third defeat of this year’s campaign in Walsh Park.

Defeat to Waterford and Tipperary’s five-point success over Dublin means Group 2 has been sorted.

The Deise, the Premier County and Cork will take the three knock-out places with only the order of their finishing positions to be sorted.

Two goals either side of half-time told the difference as Beth Carton struck before the break and Sarah Lacey got the second green flag on 40 minutes.

Beforehand, it had been close with the teams level three times. Chloe Morey was Clare’s scorer-in-chief and her three points kept it tight before four consecutive Beth Carton minors made it 0-6 to 0-3 in Waterford’s favour.

The Banner didn’t panic and Morey contributed another brace but Beth Carton’s goal allowed the Deise daylight and they led 1-7 to 0-6 at half-time.

Orlaith Duggan opened Clare’s second half account reducing arrears to three but they were hit with a second sucker punch when Sarah Lacey struck 1-1 in quick succession to give the hosts a seven-point cushion.

Sinead Conlon and Beth Carton traded before Ger O’Connell’s team enjoyed their best spell in the final quarter as Mairead Scanlon (2), Clare Hehir and Andrea O’Keeffe found the target leaving it 2-9 to 0-12.

But the required goal didn’t come as Beth Carton struck Waterford’s last point. It was enough for the win and ensure Clare’s All-Ireland aspirations were over even with next week’s game against Dublin to come.

Scorers – Clare: Chloe Morey 0-6, Mairead Scanlon 0-2, Orlaith Duggan 0-1, Sinead Conlon 0-1, Clare Hehir 0-1, Andrea O’Keeffe 0-1.
