Friday’s edition of Morning Focus brought live coverage from Doonbeg as the village continued to welcome visitors for the Amgen Irish Open, with a strong focus on the community, local businesses, sustainability and the village’s rich heritage.
Alan Morrissey spoke with Adrian Kelly, Chief Fire Officer with Clare County Council, and Jenny Drysdale of Doonbeg Community Development, about the work being done by Clare County Council and the local community to promote Doonbeg and create a festive atmosphere throughout the village. They discussed the support being provided by the Council during the Irish Open, as well as the range of activities available for those who want to enjoy Doonbeg beyond the golf course.
We also heard from Karen Foley, Environmental Awareness Officer with Clare County Council, about sustainability and waste management in Doonbeg this weekend. She discussed how the community is coming together to make the Fáilte Fest a greener event and the steps being taken to manage waste and promote environmental awareness.
Anne Behan from McConnell Woollen Mills and Bernadette Haugh, Head of Enterprise with Clare County Council and the Local Enterprise Office Clare, joined us to discuss how local businesses are being supported and promoted during the Amgen Irish Open and Walker Cup.
We also explored Doonbeg’s history and heritage, with Aisling Horgan Ryan telling us about the new free Audio Heritage Trail. The award-winning Doonbeg Heritage Trail, first launched in 2022, has now been expanded to include audio, allowing visitors to explore 29 points of interest while hearing the stories, folklore and history connected to the people and places around them.
