The importance of integrated universally designed public transport services that include the built environment and information and communication technologies is underpinned by Article 9 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The National Disability Authority here conducts research and provides evidence-based policy advice to Government on such matters.

Transport For Ireland says it’s committed to making travel safe, accessible and welcoming for everyone, regardless of age or ability.

They work continuously with transport operators to improve access across all TFI public transport services.

In Co Clare, transport services and accessibility have improved in recent years but it’s accepted that a lot more needs to be done.

New regional and local bus services have been introduced across Clare but there are still gaps in the system.

Access to public buildings has also seen important advancement in recent times but issues remain in this area also.

Padraic Hayes lives in Shannon and is a user of public transport and a campaigner for additional services, not just for those in his area but across the county.

He is also chairperson of the Clare Leader Forum and is on the board the Clare Public Participation Network.
