Warning Over the Dangers Of “Tombstoning” From Clare Cliffs

Young people are being warned that the consequences of “tombstoning” into the sea can be tragic, after a number of youths were filmed jumping from cliffs in County Clare yesterday.

The 6 people who jumped from the cliffs in Kilkee just narrowly missed the rocks below before splashing into the sea.

The video has been viewed more than 21 thousand times since being posted online yesterday evening.

Clare County Council is appealing to parents to speak with their children about the dangers of jumping into the sea from cliffs edges and rocks.

The CEO of Irish Water Safety, John Leech, says jumping from such a large height poses a number of risks:

Statement from Clare County Council’s Water Safety Officer

Clare McGrath says “Having viewed the footage of teenagers jumping from the cliff off the cliff walk in Kilkee, I would strongly advise all NOT to engage in such activities. This is extremely dangerous and could have life altering repercussions.

Signage is erected along the cliffs at Newfoundout, Kilkee, advising members of the public against diving from the cliff edge or rocks.

Clare County Council strongly advises members of the public not to dive or jump into the water from any cliff edge or rocks and to swim only at one of Clare’s 11 lifeguarded beaches or in areas that are known locally as safe, and where there are ringbuoys present to conduct a safe rescue. The diving boards in Kilkee are also suitable for diving and jumping, subject to the correct tidal conditions, as shown on the depth indicator.

Clare County Council would appeal to parents to speak with their children about the dangers of jumping into the sea from cliffs edges and rocks”.
