Tributes are being paid in Clare to “one of the most important singers this country has ever produced”.
Dolores Keane, who passed away on Monday at the age of 72, will be laid to rest in Donaghpatrick Cemetery this afternoon, following Funeral Mass in St Patrick and St Cuana Church, Kilcoona.
Born into a family steeped in traditional music, the Galway native was the vocalist in the original Dé Danann lineup before launching a solo career that produced five albums.
She was best known for her interpretations of songs such as Caledonia, Galway Bay and The Island, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the TG4 Gradam Ceoil Awards in 2022.
West Wind presenter and musician Eoin O’Neill says Dolores Keane was one of a kind and gave a voice to so many people, keeping the traditional ballad sacred.
