The Department of Transport says it can stop making data on driving offences to insurance companies, if the new system does not bring down costs for safer drivers.

From today, insurance companies can see if policy holders have committed serious driving offences and take them into account when calculating premiums.
Previously they only had access to the number of points a driver had on their licence.
