Just over six months ago, the coalition’s Programme for Government stipulated that Shannon Airport would be supported as a hub for testing new aviation technologies.

That goal is one step closer today, with the grant of planning permission for an advanced aerial mobility research lab at the Clare base.

The development is set to take place over a 1.5 hectare site at Rineanna South which will include a new taxiway, aircraft set down area, reconfigured airside boundaries, a solar panel array and 48 parking spaces.

The Shannon based Future Mobility Campus Ireland is also involved in the plans, with its logo adorning designs for the new building submitted in the Shannon Airport Authority DAC’s planning application.

The company describes itself as Ireland’s leading hub for research, development, and innovation in the international mobility and transportation landscape across air and land.

Planning permission was granted by Clare County Council subject to 14 conditions
