Clare’s Senior Gardaí will be urged to provide assurances today that policing across the county won’t suffer unduly from recent station closures and further retirements.
The issue is set to top the agenda at the meeting of the Joint Policing Committee at Clare County Council, which was adjourned last month, as a mark of respect following the murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohue.
Councillors have expressed concern over the level of garda coverage here after eight stations shut in January while representatives in North Clare want increased garda surveillance to deal with what they claim is a rise in drug fuelled crime.
West Clare Fine Gael Councillor Oliver Garry would also like to see a text message service alerting people to strangers – to be expanded across the county.
