Ryanair has been granted planning permission for a major project worth €50m at Shannon Airport.
It’s after the airline overcame an environmental issue threatening to derail the plans earlier this month.
Having first unveiled the plans in July, Ryanair proposed to construct a four-bay Maintenance Overhaul and Repair Hangar along with an engineering academy and staff accommodation.
The airline says the project will involve a €50m investment and will create at least 300 highly-skilled jobs.
The plans hit a snag earlier this month after the council raised concerns over environmental pollution.
The local authority stated that Ryanair’s plans to build a two-metre high soil contamination berm could impact human health and sensitive environmental receptors such as the Shannon Estuary.
In response, Ryanair threatened to pull the plug on the Shannon project and move the plans to Poland if planning wasn’t granted in time for construction to begin in 2027.
Ryanair subsequently submitted updated environmental protection plans to the council and planning permission has now been granted subject to seven conditions.
