President Higgins Concludes South American Trip

President Higgins is moving to the final part of his 11 day official trip to South America.

He is to leave El Salvador tonight and travel to Costa Rica.

President Higgins has described the last few days in El Salvador as moving and emotional; on Wednesday he received the state’s honour of merit award – the highest honour conferred upon any foreign dignitary.

The President spent much of his early political career highlighting the human rights abuses meted out by the ruling military government in EL Salvador and while he was here he met with survivors of its civil war and visited memorial sites of the many slain friends he had come to know through his work.

Tonight, he will arrive in Costa Rica where he will continue trade meetings with the business community and the President of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla.

He’ll also make a key note speech to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and establish firm bi-lateral economic cooperation,
