President Michael D. Higgins will lead commemorations of the Great Famine at a ceremony in Kilrush this afternoon.
Large crowds are expected in the West Clare town this afternoon to remember the hundreds of thousands of people who lost their lives and emigrated during the Famine.
Along with Westport and Skibbereen, Kilrush was one of the worst affected areas during the famine, and a host of events to remember this have been held throughout the county over the past nine days.
Ambassadors from over 40 countries are expected to attend today, along with President Michael D. Higgins who will address the crowd.
Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Jimmy Deenihan is Chair of the National Famine Commemoration Committee says it promises to be a special afternoon.
