MidWest Agricultural Land Prices Rising At Fastest Rate In The Country

It’s claimed a lack of young people entering farming coupled with the nitrates derogation has caused land prices to soar in Clare.

New data from the Central Statistics Office shows the average price of a hectare of farm land in the MidWest rose by 35% to over €25,300 last year ,which is the greatest increase nationwide.

This is despite a sharp decline in the number of transactions across Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary, with just 476 land sales taking place last year, compared to 556 in 2022.

 

Clare Irish Creamery and Milk Suppliers Association Chair Martin McMahon says farmers are either selling for retirement or buying to keep their herd count, leading to price hikes.
