The major investigation into breaches of data protection in the insurance industry found that staff at some insurance companies here were flouting data protection legislation.

According to the Irish Times, staff inappropriately accessed data to examine the claims history of family, friends and a number of celebrities.

The major investigation by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner also found staff were using "pre-claim" information when calculating quotes.

One of the celebrities who’s claims history was inappropriately accessed is understood to be a high-profile sports star while the other works in broadcasting.

It’s understood that disciplinary action has been taken by the insurance companies against the employees involved.

And insurers have now been ordered to remove some data being stored on a shared insurance claims database.
