A Kilrush businesswoman claims water quality warnings issued by Clare County Council only serve to “frighten” tourists and others availing of beach and pier amenities.
It comes as nine prior warning notices have been issued across Munster with Lahinch, White Strand Miltown Malbay, White Strand Doonbeg, Kilkee, Spanish Point and Cappagh Pier in Kilrush all having five-day swim restrictions put in place due to “possible pollution”.
Catherine Lahiff has questioned the effectiveness of prior warning notices due to the impact they have on tourism-dependent businesses in seaside towns and villages.
The Coffey’s Cafe and Pizzeria manager says while it is important to identify where there is a risk of elevated bacteria, the notices can put people off going to the beach where there is no dangerous element present.
