Health Workers To Escalate Action If Pay Dispute Isn’t Resolved

SIPTU says strike action by health workers could be extended to other facilities including Ennis General Hospital, if progress isn’t made in their dispute over pay.

38 hospitals and healthcare facilities including University Hospital Limerick, University Maternity Hospital Limerick and Croom Orthopaedic Hospital will be affected, when 10,000 workers take to the picket line from 8am tomorrow.

Ennis General is currently not affected.

The row centres on whether workers are due a pay rise under a job evaluation scheme and the Finance Minister is today urging both sides to work to find a resolution.

SIPTU Representative Paul Bell has told Clare FM’s Morning Focus that efforts are being made to put contingency plans in place, but he says they’re willing to keep up their action for as long as it takes.

The HSE says the strike will have a significant impact on patients, meanwhile.

Hospitals around the country are cancelling surgeries, outpatient appointments, and reducing catering facilities for patients as a result of the planned strike.
