A former Clare Minister for Defence is warning that Budget 2027 could be seriously challenging for the coalition.
It’s after the Government survived a confidence motion last night, but saw its cabinet and Dáil majority take a hit.
The Government survived its own confidence motion last night, with 92 votes in its favour and 78 against, however the shock resignation of Michael Healy-Rae and Danny Healy-Rae from the coalition, has seen it’s Dáil majority reduced to 5.
Despite this, Ministers are denying the Government’s been weakened by the withdrawal of the Healy-Reas, with Enterprise Minister Peter Burke claiming the opposition is all over the place.
It’s predicted that Ireland will have a budget surplus of over €10bn at the end of 2026, but despite this the state is still grappling with a €230bn national debt.
Former Defence Minister and Clare TD Tony Killeen is warning the next budget will be challenging for the coalition, as it needs to take a balanced approach with all sectors looking for supports.
Clare’s first ever female TD, meanwhile, believes this government will last its full term and that there won’t be a snap election in the coming months, despite the pressures of last week.
Former Fine Gael Deputy Madeleine Taylor Quinn is also calling for a review of state intelligence to ensure passage to strategic ports and the oil refinery can never be illegally blocked again.
