The two contenders for the Fine Gael leadership have made their last appeals to Clare party members for votes, ahead of the ballot in Ennis tonight.
Leo Varadkar and Simon Coveney both outlined what they intend to do for Clare when speaking on toady’s edition of Morning Focus.
While the result won’t be known until tomorrow evening, Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar remains the front-runner to replace Enda Kenny when the result is announced.
However, Simon Coveney today told Clare Fm that he believes he will cause a shock.
To do that, the Cork Minister admits that he needs around 5 parliamentary members to switch support for him, and that he’s speaking with some TDs and Senators to make this happen.
He declined to comment on whether this includes Clare’s Senator or TDs but said he’s close with all three.
While Leo Varadkar remains the front runner, it’s expected that most grassroots members here will go for Simon Coveney.
Only one Councillors, meanwhile, has gone for the Dublin TD though he insists that, if he becomes Taoiseach, he’ll represent all of Ireland.
He pointed to his track record at Shannon Airport as proof that he will work for Clare, and says a priority will be getting jobs into the Banner.
Fine Gael members will cast their ballots in Ennis tonight, and the final result will be known tomorrow evening.
