A Clare farmer fears policymakers here may not fully grasp the impact soaring fuel and fertiliser costs could have on food security.
It comes as the Government is calling for the temporary suspension of an EU carbon levy on fertiliser.
The Agriculture Minister says the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism risks adding further hikes to the cost of fertiliser, which has already risen since the conflict broke out between Iran, Israel and the US.
Speaking after a farmers’ gathering at the Banner Plaza last night, Kilmihil-based IFA member, Edel Curtin, says farmers are facing very difficult decisions over soaring costs and the wider impact is not fully appreciated.
Meanwhile, the important role of women in agriculture will be to the forefront at a meeting in Ennis this week.
Clare IFA is holding a public meeting on Wednesday at 8pm in the Treacys West County Hotel.
Guest speakers on the night will include Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú MEP the IFA’s National Farm Family Chair, Teresa Roche.
