EPA Report Shows E.Coli in Clare Water

Three private group water schemes in Clare were found to be contaminated with E. Coli in 2007.

The latest annual report from the EPA shows that Clare County Council is over 98 percent compliant with the Drinking Water standards

All the public water supplies in the county are fully compliant with the E.Coli parametric value.

The annual report from the Environmental Protection Agency took in all water supplies in the country and the local authorities that are responsible for monitoring them.

In Clare, a total of nearly 8 and a half thousand individual tests on drinking water in 2007 were carried out.

The EPA found that Clare County Council is 98.5 percent compliant with parameters set out by the EPA.

The supply in Ennis, Miltown Malbay and Kildysart were three public water supplies in the county that had boil notices in 2007

In total, 3 of the county’s private group water schemes were found to be contaminated with E.Coli throughout the year…no traces of the bug was found in the public water supplies

There were no instances of exceeding of any of the chemical standards in any private group water schemes or private water supplies in 2007, however, coliform bacteria was found in 9 of the 12 private group water schemes in the county

There are 8 supplies on the Remedial Action List of the EPA, one less than 2006.

Of these supplies, one will be upgraded, 2 will be replaced and 5 will have improvements.

Clare County Council has also been instructed to install chlorine monitors and alarms at all treatment plants in the county, as of last August, 1 plant out of 19 had been fitted with these measures.
