Ennis Cllr Reassures Residents Amid Homeless Shelter Safety Concerns

An Ennis Councillor is moving to reassure residents that all safety concerns will be addressed for a newly planned emergency accommodation centre for women and children.

It comes as Clare County Council has submitted a planning application for a facility at the former Grey Gables site on Station Road.

The former Ennis B&B was purchased in 2024 for €650,000 and construction could commence next year with an estimated build time of 18 months.

Following a public consultation on the project, local residents expressed concerns about the scale of the structure, parking availability and safeguarding at the proposed unit.

Ennis Municipal District, meanwhile, is set to brief project engineers and architects on the development next Tuesday.

Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy says all concerns will be taken on board.

The new premises will have two and three-storey elements and the design statement outlines four different types of rooms, including an emergency room for short-notice arrivals.

There’ll also be a residents’ kitchen, dining room, family communal room, play room with linked external play area, and an external playground and smoking area.

Clare Haven Director Siobhán O’Connor says facilities of this kind provide a vital step in the journey of homeless women and children.
