EU Fisheries Ministers have reached agreement on the banning of the practice of discards- whereby excess fish are thrown back overboard from trawlers.

The deal follows 21 hours of talks with the ban set to take affect from January of next year.
It will initially apply to pelagic or surface fish and will then be extended to white fish stocks from 2016.
The aim is to minimise the catching of juvenile fish and unwanted species.
