Council Faced €4 Million Energy Bill In 2025

Clare County Council’s energy bill came to over €4 million last year.

The local authority has revealed it reduced its energy usage in 2025, with public lighting and transport accounting for more than half of its consumption.

The council used over 19.3 million kilowatt hours last year which was marginally down on the previous year and 0.6% below its average.

Public lighting and transport were the biggest energy users, each making up 27% of total consumption.

The local authority spent €4.08 million on energy in 2025, with public lighting and transport once again being the greatest contributors.

Other factors included sports and recreation, tourism, the Áras Contae an Chláir building, fire services and water services.

To comply with EU law, the council must reduce its fossil emissions by 51% by 2030.

Presently, it’s responsible for 1,498 tonnes of CO2 emissions and must bring this down to 1,094, leaving a gap of 404 tonnes.

Additionally, it’s required to improve its energy efficiency by 50%.

Its energy performance indicator currently stands at 57.2% – 7.2% shy of its goal.
