A new all-time-high temperature record could be set in Ireland today.

Met Eireann is predicting temperatures of up to 31 degrees today, but there’s a chance the record high of 33.3 degrees registered at Kilkenny Castle all the way back in 1887 could be eclipsed.

The elderly, children and people with health issues such as diabetes are at particular risk of dehydration and heat stroke.

Aisling Cooke, Caregiver Training Manager at Dovida, which provides services across Clare, says there are a number of practical steps people can take to help older people remain comfortable and connected during the warm spell.

The ESB is reminding people of the dangers and potentially serious consequences of swimming and other recreational activities in its Arndnacrusha reservoir.

Given the continuing spell of warm weather and the beginning of the summer holidays for schoolchildren, the utility is urging people to take note of safety warnings which are visible on signs posted around the South East Clare reservoir.

It says the area is unsafe for swimming due to deep, fast-flowing waters, fluctuating water levels, and uneven terrain, which present significant hazards to the public.

Manager, Hydro Operations ESB Henry Bouchier is urging people to choose safer swimming locations.

The status yellow high temperature warning has been extended until Saturday at 9am, but we should see cooler and more manageable weather over the weekend.

Meteorologist with Met Eireann, Holly O’Neill says people need a break from this unusually hot week.
