Concern has emerged over what’s been described as a “gaping hole” in emergency services in Kilkee.

Councillor Cillian Murphy says the tragic death of a man, who fell from the cliffs while fishing earlier this month, highlights the need for rope rescue capacity in the tourist town to be provided either by the local fire service or the Irish Coast Guard.

The nearest Fire Service with a Line Rescue capability is based in Kilrush, where personnel are trained and equipped with capabilities to respond to such rescues, with Moneypoint Power Station having specific rescue requirements, while there is also a Line Rescue capability at Ennistymon Fire Station.

Clare County Council says personnel involved in both stations are trained to a very high standard and are available to assist other emergency services at line rescue incidents throughout the county.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Murphy believes, however, that risk needs to be weighed up against the number of incidents occurring.
