Clare’s Minister of State claims ramping up wastewater infrastructure towards the end of this year will move the Government closer to its housing targets.
With the Dáil summer recess now underway, attention is turning to the successes and failures of the Government since last September.
Coinciding with the end of the Dáil term, the Department of Housing published the ‘Delivering Homes, Building Communities 2025-2030 Mid-Year Progress Report’.
The report argues the State is making “steady progress” towards its goal of building 300,000 new homes by 2030.
It says “all indicators are moving in the right direction”, with 35,000 planning permissions granted and 38,000 new homes built in the first three months of the year, up 8% and 26%, respectively.
Figures from the Central Statistics Office reveal just 7,856 new dwellings were completed in the first quarter of the year however, 52% of which were scheme houses while 30% were apartments and 18% were single units.
Tulla Fianna Fáil Minister of State Timmy Dooley insists unlocking wastewater infrastructure and developing on newly-zoned sites will expedite housing delivery.
In the latest Irish Independent/Ireland Thinks poll meanwhile, Fine Gael was the most popular party in the country, with its popularity rising by one point to 20%.
Sinn Féin’s fell by one to 19% and Fianna Fáil saw a one-point increase to 17%.
Shannon Sinn Féin TD Donna McGettigan says the general rise in support for opposition parties shows the Government is falling out of favour with the public.
