Almost 20,000 medical procedures have been cancelled at Ennis Hospital in the past two and a half years.
New figures released by HSE MidWest show over 850 cases related to overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick.
Approximately 19,296 procedures and appointments have been cancelled at Ennis Hospital since 2024.
The most common reason involved the patient cancelling themselves, this accounted for 55% of cases or 10,656 to be exact.
A further 3,517 were cancelled by Consultant teams , while 2,838 appointments were no longer required according to HSE MidWest.
In the Outpatient Department, 135 medical procedures were also postponed due to clinics being overbooked.
Escalation protocols which occasionally require the use of beds from other hospitals to alleviate overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick and capacity issues within HSE MidWest, also led to significant service disruption.
The data shows 452 appointments involving inpatients, outpatients and endoscopies were cancelled due to escalation protocols, with approximately 409 outpatient procedures deferred due to the hospital group being “over capacity”.
