Clare GP Calls For Shingles Vaccine To Be Made Free For Vulnerable Cohorts

A Clare GP is calling for the shingles vaccine to be made free for older people and those most at risk.

The HSE is currently examining the clinical and cost effectiveness of a free vaccine programme for the illness which causes a painful, blistering rash and can develop into long-lasting, severe nerve pain called neuralgia.

The Oireachtas Health Committee has this week been told that the roll-out of the vaccine for over-65s would cost €218 million.

A two-dose course can cost up to €480 in Ireland but Lahinch-based GP Michael Kelleher believes some vulnerable cohorts shouldn’t have to pay for it.
