Clare Government TD Says Allocation Of Garda Resources Has Been “Urbancentric”

A Clare Government TD claims the allocation of garda resources has been “urbancentric” in recent years but believes change is coming.

It’s after the Justice Minister said during a visit to this county that garda numbers will likely increase here if nationwide recruitment efforts bear fruit.

Local elected representatives took the opportunity to raise a number of longstanding concerns relating to law and order with Jim O’Callaghan during his trip to Clare on Friday.

Chief among these was the controversial merger of Clare and Tipperary’s garda divisions in 2023, and arising issues around resources.

A total of 298 gardaí are currently operating in Clare, which is 40 fewer than in 2007, while call-outs increased by 15% here last year.

Ennistymon Fianna Fáil Councillor Shane Talty, who spoke to the minister about anti-social behaviour in his area, says threats and intimidation are “persistent” locally.

Speaking during the visit, Jim O’Callaghan said the allocation of garda members is a matter for the Garda Commissioner.

He claimed, however, that if the number nationwide can reach 15,000 by the end of this year, he’s confident Clare will see an increase.

Of the 298 gardaí based in Clare, 13 are stationed at Shannon Airport.

Meelick Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe insists these shouldn’t be included in Clare’s overall figure.
