Clare Gardaí are urging people to “Lock Up and Light Up” to help prevent warm-weather break-ins.
They say a large proportion of burglaries at this time of year involve criminals simply walking through unsecured doors or open windows. The most commonly targeted items include laptops, mobile phones, tools and bicycles.
Householders are being encouraged to always lock windows and doors when leaving their property, even if they’re only stepping out into the garden, while those going away on holidays are advised to make sure their home appears occupied while they’re away.
Sergeant Edel Burke from Kilrush Garda Station is advising people to secure access points.
“Always lock all windows and doors when leaving your property, even if you are just stepping out into the garden. Reinforce sliding doors with a metal rod in the track.
“Make the House Look Occupied. If you’re going away on holiday, set internal lights to timer switches and consider motion sensor lights on the exterior.
“Maintain the Exterior. Trim hedges and trees near windows so they don’t provide hiding spots for burglars.
“Hide Valuables. Keep expensive electronics and keys well away from windows, letterboxes, and the front door where “fishing” can occur.
“Outbuildings. Ensure sheds and garages are securely locked, and lock away expensive gardening or sports equipment immediately after use.
“If you’re going away on holiday, ask a trusted neighbour or family member to collect your post, or utilize a temporary mail-minder service.
“Avoid posting holiday photos and plans online until you have safely returned home.
“Inform a reliable neighbour of your travel dates so they can keep an eye out for any suspicious activity.
“Never leave cars unattended with windows down or doors unlocked, even when parked in your own driveway.
“Hide All Valuables. Remove all electronics and bags from plain sight, or take them with you.
“If you’re attending large events like concerts or matches, be aware of your surroundings and protect your pockets in crowded summer areas where pickpocketing is prevalent,” Sergeant Burke concluded.
