GSOC Ends Probe Into Penalty Points Cancellations

A report has found that Clare drivers were among the most likely in the country to get their penalty points cancelled by Gardaí.

The Garda watchdog has published its report into allegations that the system was being abused, but has recommended that their investigation goes no further.

GSOC says too many members of the Gardaí were allowed to cancel penalty points.

Over 440 did so over the four year period, up to 2012, examined in today’s report, some outside of their geographic area, which is against protocol.

3,646 offences were cancelled in Clare, out of 76,000 nationally, and the rate of offences cancelled locally was the highest of any county.

GSOC met with Garda Whistleblower Maurice McCabe five times during this investigation and looked at the overall system rather than each individual allegation.

GSOC says its decided not to do another phase of the investigation because it would cost at least one million euro and its unsure if the cost would outweigh the benefit.

Its written to the acting Garda Commissioner to inform him of this – but GSOC says it will keep complaints like this to the forefront in the interest of road safety and public confidence in the Gardaí.
