Claims Students Being Forced To Consider Dropping Out Of College

It’s claimed students attending third-level institutions in the region are being forced to consider dropping out of college because of high travel costs and a shortage of accommodation.

New data shows that 33 students at University of Galway declared themselves homeless during the last academic year, while a further 47 said their temporary accommodation was about to end.

They are among 346 students reported as homeless nationally, though the overall figure is expected to be much higher, as several larger universities, including DCU, UCD and Trinity College Dublin, don’t record the number of homeless students.

The Vice President for Welfare and Equality at the University of Galway Students’ Union, Molly Hickey, says accommodation shortages are forcing students to make difficult decisions about continuing their education.
