It's claimed estimates on the funding required to maintain the standard of rural roads don't go far enough.

It comes as the Transport Minister has admitted to an Oireachtas Transport Committee that there isn't enough money to maintain the standard of local and regional roads.

Minister Shane Ross says he's secured a 10 per cent increase in the budget for the upkeep of local roads in 2017, but that only brings the spend up to 275 million euro, less than half of the 580 million that's needed. 

Roads funding in Clare has dropped from 15.3 million euro in 2002 to 13 million this year and Killaloe Independent Councillor Michael Begley says the lack of funding means efforts to keep roads up to standard are going backwards
