Chemical Leak In Shannon

Seven people are being treated in hospital after a chemical spill at a facility in Shannon.

 

 

The alarm was raised at around 5:00 at the Chemifloc plant at the Smithstown Industrial Estate. It’s understood there was a chlorine spill in one of the buildings.

Five men and two women, all understood to be company employees, have been taken to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick suffering with breathing difficulties.

A number of buildings in the vicinity of the plant have been evacuated.

Eight units of the fire brigade from Shannon and Ennis are dealing with the incident.

As a precautionary measure, gardai have advised  motorists in the surrounding areas, including the M18 motorway, Sixmilebridge and Newmarket on Fergus,  to keep their windows closed, – however its understood the chemicals and their odour are dissipating this evening.
