Clare County Council has called on the Tanaiste not to proceed with changes which they say will put the future of hundreds of post offices under threat.

As part of her portfolio with the Department of Social Protection, Joan Burton has put forward a new Social Welfare and Pensions Bill.
Its changes include a reference to An Post as the processor of Social Welfare payments, and Councillors have expressed fears that this could open the door for another company to take the contract.
The resulting fall-off in business would see business at post offices fall, and Cooarclare Fianna Fáil Councillor Bill Chambers says this could be devastating.
