Calls have been made for the NRA to carry out a safety audit of the M18 motorway near Crusheen.
The route was twice closed by Gardaí following heavy hail showers on December 19th, but the National Roads Authority insists these are virtually impossible to forecast, and that it had treated the road on a number of occasions that day.
However, Councilors remain unhappy with this explanation, with some arguing that there are safety concerns on the road at all times of the year.
East Clare Fianna Fail Councillor Pat Hayes says the route needs to be checked properly for safety issues.
