Response from Clare County Council
“Clare County Council is aware of concerns raised by residents in Broadford regarding road safety and traffic speeds through the village.
As part of a broader pilot study examining traffic conditions in a number of villages across East Clare, traffic assessments have been carried out on the approach roads to Broadford. Arising from this work, a number of traffic management options are currently under consideration. These remain at an early, preliminary stage.
In addition, a speed survey will be undertaken on Broadford Main Street to gather further data on vehicle speeds and traffic behaviour. This information will assist in informing any future assessments or considerations in relation to traffic management within the village.
Where a development becomes liable for commercial rates, this liability does not arise immediately, as rates are determined and levied by Táilte Éireann following formal valuation. Once assessed, any commercial rates paid would form part of Clare County Council’s general commercial rates income.
Commercial rates income is not ring‑fenced to the area in which it is generated. Instead, it is pooled and used to support the delivery of essential services across the entire county, in line with statutory local authority funding arrangements.”
