Around 200 farmers from Clare have joined their colleagues from right around the country in a major demonstration at government buildings today.
Members of the Beef Plan Movement are protesting outside the Dáil over the EU’s Mercosur deal, which opens the European market to Latin American countries.
Their concern is that cheap beef from these countries will flood the market here, thereby undercutting the products coming from Ireland at a time when they are already struggling to achieve a sustainable price for their beef.
Liscannor farmer Pat Nagle is among those attending today’s protest and has been telling Clare FM’s James Mulhall this is the beginning of a long road – but they won’t be going anywhere.
