The Airbus A320 was operated by the carrier Germanwings – and was travelling from Barcelona to Dusseldorf when it came down this morning.
Flight-tracking data suggests at one point, it was plummeting 5-thousand feet a minute.
Search and rescue crews have been deployed to an area around Digne les Bains to find the wreckage.
French President Francois Hollande has called it a 'tragedy'.
