Over 1,000 Patients Waiting More Than 18 Months For Outpatient Appointments At UHL

Over 1,000 people are now waiting over 18 months for outpatient appointments at University Hospital Limerick.

The latest monthly figures from the National Treatment Purchase Fund show there’s also been a marked increase in patients waiting for services at Ennis General.

At the end of May, 23,974 adults and 7,046 children were waiting for either an inpatient or outpatient appointment at UHL.

For the adults, consultants in Dermatology, Cardiology, Gynaecology, and General Surgery were most in demand, accounting for 41% of all patients on the waiting list.

Of those, 588 were waiting over a year and a half to be called for a Dermatology appointment, while a further 71 patients were waiting over 18 months to see a specialist in Geriatric Medicine.

For the children on the waiting list at Dooradoyle, 70 were waiting more than 18 months for Paediatric appointments, 40 for Dermatology Consultants, while two minors were waiting this time for ear, nose, and throat services.

At Ennis General, meanwhile, Cardiology remained the most in demand service for patients.

At the end of May, 1,084 people were waiting to see a heart disease specialist; an increase of 8.5% within a month.

Of this cohort, 274 are waiting over a year for an appointment, with 75 waiting longer than 18 months.
