Morning Focus – Wednesday 30/10/19

On today’s Morning Focus, we heard from Connie Danaher of Killimer following her creation of the ‘In Case Of Emergency’ card.

The ICE Card which was featured on an episode of Fair City last week, alerts first-responders to someone’s medical condition and next of kin in the event of an incident. The card featured on TV when Fair City’s Rose collapsed after running out of her medication for diabetes. The card was discovered in Rose’s bag, alerting others to her condition. Connie told us more about the ICE card and where she got the idea from.

Before that, to start Morning focus we discussed overcrowding in UHL, following a letter we received from a listener in West Clare yesterday which highlighted the current state of the Emergency Department in UHL.

Next on the show, Fr. Harry Bohan of Sixmilebridge, joined us on-air to discuss his concern at the closure of Molex as well as his frustration at the ongoing dominance of the Dublin region when it comes to economic development. Within his community, Fr Harry is known not only as parish priest and for his involvement with the Clare Hurlers but for his work as a Sociologist and his role in advocating for the development of the Midwestern region. Last Sunday when Fr Harry addressed the congregation at St. Finnachta’s Church, he spoke of his sadness and the concerns he has.

Next on the show, Kevin Doyle, Group Political Editor for Independent News & Media joined us on the line ahead of the ‘vote-gate’ scandal as the matter is set to go before a meeting of the Oireachtas Ethics Committee. Last week, Clare TD Timmy Dooley apologised to the Dáil (as did party colleagues Niall Collins, Lisa Chambers and Barry Cowen) for ‘phantom’ votes cast on his behalf, when he wasn’t in the chamber.

Next, Marian Moloney, Vice-Chair of Galway Visually Impaired Activities Club, joined us on air to tell us about the Galway Visually Impaired Activities Club and to invite anyone with vision difficulties to get involved with the group. They’re into everything from dancing and cycling to tennis, cookery and technology.

With the support of NCBI, they’re holding an information day on Saturday week, November 9th, when they’ll also have information on housing and employment support. The event runs from 11am to 3pm at the Galmont Hotel in Galway City.

Next on the show, despite Montessori being traditionally associated with children, our next guests hope to change that perspective. We heard from Davnet Dwyer, learning facilitator with L3M Ireland and Aisling Neary who is also involved in bringing the programme to Carrigoran House in Newmarket On Fergus. The programme uses the principles of Montessori to help older people in what they describe as ‘enjoyable’ Life Long Learning for Older Adults.

If anyone is interested in becoming a trainer the number to contact is – 087 6865 825.

Also to briefly mention Carrigoran are holding a free melanoma screening day on November 8th. They will also have free advice and information available from specialists from the Marie Keating Foundation, Parkinsons Society & Alzheimer’s Society. These organisations will be present to offer advice and answer any queries. It’s a great opportunity for members of the public to come along and avail of the information and advice. They can also make a free appointment to see Dr Gavin by calling 061 368100 however places are limited.

To finish up a very busy Morning Focus show, we heard from two young Clare women as they are embarking on a trip into business, while also looking to fight back against an eroding of culture in Dublin City. Rebecca Breene McDonnell is from Clarecastle and Sorcha Murphy is from Roslevan. They both attended st. Flannan’s in Ennis before heading to DCU, and they’ve now setup She Networks Publicity, which is representing musical artists and also looking to fight back against the selling of pubs and music venues for housing. They’ve already organised a series of events in which they’ve looked to reclaim cultural hotspots. Sorcha and Rebecca spoke to Gavin about their plans.
