Alonna Byrne, Studyclix Communications Manager outlined the Clare results of the Studyclix Annual Student Sentiment Index. The most alarming results included – 70%Clare Secondary Students addicted to their mobile phones with the national average at 55% and 19% of Clare students using Tinder or other dating websites, compared to the national average of 13%. Margaret Slattery is the Clare Youth Service CEO, she joined the discussion, suggesting that CYS are taking measures to reduce the amount of time young people are spending on mobile devices and providing education on

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin Labour Minister with responsibility for Equality, New Communities and Culture spoke to John following his kick-started ‘PolskaÉire 2015’ festival, the first ever Polish-Irish Festival, on Saturday last. The festival, which runs from March 21st to 29th, aims to celebrate the estimated 150,000 members of the Polish community who live in Ireland today. There is an estimate of 2000 polish natives living in Clare. Jacek Godzisz is the one of the Clare PolskaEira Events Organiser who has lived in Ennis almost 10 years. Events happening in Clare from Wednesday March 25 – Saturday the 28th including a soccer match between Polonia Clare and Ireland Clare at Lees Road on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s UEFA EURO 2016 Qualifier: Republic of Ireland v Poland – More information at www.facebook.com/PolskaEireFestivalEnnis

 

For the first time in his Presidency Michael D Higgins has paid a visit to his former Secondary School in Ennis. The over 1200 pupils of St Flannan's college greeted President Higgins and his wife Sabina with a guard of honour displays of their work and traditional music. In the two hour long visit to the school the President spoke of his found memories of his time at St Flannan's and of his delight at Ennis receiving the Fleadh Ceoil in 2016. Clare FM's Aisling O' Rourke was there for Morning Focus.

New research finds that babies who are breastfed for longer grow up to be more intelligent and earn more money. The study followed nearly 4 thousand babies in Brazil for more than 30 years.
It found those who were breastfed for more than a year had a higher IQ, were better educated, and their earnings were 30 percent more than those who were bottle-fed. Dr. Roy Philip, Consultant Neonatologist and Clinical Director for Maternity and Child Health UHL spoke to John about the findings and  Laura Haugh, Mummy in residence with Mummy Pages.ie and mother of two joined the conversation to outline the difficulties breastfeeding can often present for new mothers and this report although positive can add pressure to new parents. 

 

Nell Hensey 4th year Student at Colaiste Mhuire, Ennis recently won Young Animator of the Year Award 2015  at the Dingle International Film Festival for her animation Film CHECKMATE- a 5 minute film highlighting positive mental health. Siun Moran, also a 4th year Student at Colaiste Mhuire, Ennis was cast as the lead voice actor for the part of Pawn in Checkmate – both joined John in studio following their win. 
In addition, Checkmate is the only entry from Ireland that made the final 200 films out of 1000 submissions from around the world in the National Film Festival for Talented Youth in Seattle (The biggest Youth Film Festival in the World). 

 

Our Resident Wildlife Expert, John Murphy from the Clare branch Birdwatch Ireland joined us in studio to outline that Spring has arrived and animals, birds and insects alike are reawakening.
