It’s hoped a multi-million euro flood defence package for Shannon town and airport will mean those who have been unable to insure their homes will no longer be living in fear of floods.

Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran has announced the major works, which will upgrade the existing flood embankments there.

Work has already begun on the upgrading of Shannon’s flood embankments, to protect the town and airport from a 1-in-200 year tidal flood event.

This announcement will ensure the protection of homes, businesses and the airport from the danger of flooding presented by the Shannon estuary and will be carried out by the OPW, the Shannon Airport Authority and Clare County Council with the council taking the lead.

Flood Relief Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran says he will keep in close contact with the local authority to ensure the works are carried out quickly and to the required standard.

There has been a broad welcome for the announcement in Shannon this morning.

Many homeowners living in the flood-prone areas of the town have been unable to access house insurance because of where they are living.

Cathaoirleach of the Shannon Municipal District Gerry Flynn hopes we will see an immediate reversal of this once work is completed, so that people are no longer living in fear.

This morning also saw the announcement of progress on the long-awaited Ennis South Flood Relief Scheme, which will see a consultant appointed in the New Year.

CEO of Clare County Council Pat Dowling says this will help put people’s minds at ease in the county town.
