Morning Focus – Wednesday, 1st May 2019

May day on Morning Focus: we heard about realignment of Garda divisions, the affects of the salmon shortages on Clare Fisheries plus the Morning Focus Book Club and Ask the Vet are back. Catch up below:

Dr Johnny Connolly from the School of Law at UL joined us on air to talk about concerns raised over new Garda divisional pilot. Dr Connolly was part of the Commission that produced the Future of Policing Document so we heard what he had to say on the matter.

Morning Focus producer Fiona McGarry caught up with Dr Ciarán Byrne, CEO of Inland Fisheries for our next segment. Despite a drift-net ban in the 2000s, salmon stocks continue to decline and so Dr Byrne told us about the real reasons for the falling stocks. Afterwards, Gavin Grace talked to Cathal Blunnie from Doonbeg Adventures, whose family have been fishing salmon for generations. Blunnie explains the affect that the drift-net ban and the declining stocks are having. Listen to find out more about salmon shortages:

This month, we reviewed The Country Girls Trilogy by our own Edna O’Brien. Gavin was joined by Theresa Carmody O’Shea of Clare County Libraries and by Jackie Lynam, of Dublin City Libraries. Throughout April the book has been celebrated in Dublin as part of the One City, One Book Festival.

Next on the show, we heard from Frank Landy from Sweet n Green in Ennis about food waste in Ireland. It has been reported that on average each person in Ireland throws away 80 kg of waste per year. Clare FM’s Grace Kieran took the mic to find out how the people of Ennis reduce their waste.

Scarriff Postmistress Florence Bugler was joined by the community in celebrating her retirement last Friday. Bugler has been at the post office since 1990 and last week she handed the baton to Feakle postmaster Brian McMahon. Florence Bugler has been speaking to Morning Focus producer Fiona McGarry.
