On a busy Morning Focus, Gavin Grace presented a special report from the homecoming of one of the county’s heroes – mountaineer and hotelier, John Burke.

Gavin was among the crowds of people who flocked to Shannon Airport to welcome John home after his successful bid to climb Mount Everest and become the very first Banner man to do so.

The show opened with a special package on the shocking terror attack in Manchester overnight. Twenty two people died and 59 were injured in a bomb explosion at the Manchester Arena where Ariana Grande was performing to an audience of thousands.

Gavin also spoke with Barney Weston of The Mancunian newspaper who was very close to the scene and later in the show spoke to journalist Richard Chambers.

The programme also dealt with the issue of mental health and heard from Celine Moran, National Projects Manager, See Change who says there’s a greater stigma in rural areas.

With motor insurance premiums rocketing, there’s a major knock-on effect for those involved in motor sports. Ahead of the Clare Stages Rally in September, Gavin was joined on the line by Art McCarrick of Motor Sport Ireland.

Money Doctor John Lowe joined the show with some financial tips, as part of his fortnightly advice slot.

With a majority of councillors in Clare appearing to support Minister Simon Coveney in the race to lead Fine Gael, Gavin asked if there’s a rift in the party in this constituency. Clare’s three Oireachtas members are supporting Minister Leo Varadkar. Gavin was joined on the line by FG MEP for Ireland South Deirdre Clune who is backing Minister Coveney to lead Fine Gael.

John Eagleton of Met Éireann was Gavin’s next guest and said that the country is set for a very welcome heatwave over the coming days.

Frankie Coote, Clare County Dog Warden, then joined Gavin in studio for his weekly slot on animal welfare.

Ballynacally man, Paschal Kenny, was Gavin’s next guest, along with Tom McEvoy of Pieta House. Paschal told Gavin about his own struggles and how Pieta House was a lifeline for him. Pieta House can be contacted on 1800 247 247.

This edition of Morning Focus rounded off with some beautiful music from Katherine Hunka, Leader of the Irish Chamber Orchestra. Katherine joined Gavin to chat about the Killaloe Chamber Music Festival which runs from May 26 to 28.
