Morning Focus Friday 24/03/17

Morning Focus took to the road today for a special outside broadcast at the Falls Hotel, Ennistymon to mark the European Geopark Network event with Clare County Council. 

The show opened with a report from Ennis on the impact of the bus strike on commuters in this county.

Carol Gleeson, Manager of the Burren & Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark then joined Gavin to outline the exciting programme of events for the networking event.

Following news that Gardai have admitted inflating figures on the numbers of drink driving checks, Darragh Hassett of Hassett Considine Solicitors Ennis told Gavin that there’s a real danger of undermining public confidence in the system.

Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar was in Ennis for a Fine Gael event and joined Gavin by phone to discuss a range of issues including the impact of the bus strike. Listen back below:

A panel discussion followed on the importance of capitalising on the opportunities for sustainable tourism in North Clare. Gavin was joined around the table by Brid Fahy, Chairperson of the Burren Eco Tourism Network; Carol Gleeson; Nuala Mulqueeney, Director of the Aillwee Cave and Bird of Prey Centre; and Ger Dollard, Director of Services for Economic Development with Clare County Council. Gavin then met some of the international delegates at the conference, including Dr Nickolas Zouros from Greece and Kristin Rangnes from Norway. They were joined around the table by Prof Patrick McKeever, Head of Earth Sciences at UNESCO.

To discuss a cycling event coming up in Ennistymon on April 8 (the Cliffs of Moher Challenge), Gavin was joined by Denis Cullinan of the Riverside Cycling Club.

Dr Eamon Doyle, Geologist for the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Global Geopark then joined Gavin to show him some exiting finds including a 315-million year-old shark tooth found near Doolin. Listen back below:
