Serious Concern In West Clare Over Town Speed Limits

Serious concern is being expressed about the impact of higher speed limits in the west Clare towns of Kilkee and Kilrush.

Councillors Ian Lynch and Cillian Murphy are calling on Clare County Council to seek approval from TII to amend the speed limits in particular on the approach on exit from both towns, which is currently 60km per hour.

The local authority is to liaise with the transport authority on the matter, with the two councillors calling for the limit to be reduced to 50km as a matter of priority.

Kilkee Fianna Fáil Councillor Murphy says a change of as little as 10km per hour in a driver’s speed is the difference between life and death.

A spokesperson for the TII says it has worked in collaboration with Clare County Council on speed limit reviews in this county and as such, will work collaboratively with them again on any concerns that are raised.
