One of Ireland’s leading swimmers has expressed dismay about the mix-up which cost her the chance of competing in her strongest events at the World Championships in Barcelona this week.

Sycerika McMahon, whose mother hails from Lissycasey, believed she had achieved the A qualifying times in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events, and was set to take on the best of the world in both disciplines.
However, it subsequently emerged that the times she set came outside of the specified qualification period, and no one from governing body Swim Ireland informed her until it was too late.
Sycerika says she was ‘pretty devastated’, but is now focussing on the 200m Individual Medley and 100m Freestyle.
