New Campaign Aims To Reduce Abuse Towards Amateur Referees

A new campaign is being drawn up, aimed at reducing abuse towards amateur referees.

“Respect the ref” is in response to rising incidents of abuse and disrespect towards officials.

The new national behaviour change campaign will cost around 70 thousand euro.

GAA referees Administrator for Clare, Rory Hickey says a cultural shift is needed.

“Jealousy ocmes into my mind when I think about rugby refereeing, as opposed to my own code in GAA refereeing, it really does.

“Players nearly bow down to rugby refereee, it’s fantastic to see.

“It’s not all doom and gloom in the GAA with regard to this and Kudos to Jim Gavin and the FRC when they introduced the rules into Gaelic Football.”
